Showing Up When Family Needs Us

There’s no hesitation when family calls—we just show up.

This past week, our family received heartbreaking news: a beloved family member had taken his wings. In less than 48 hours, we rallied together, coordinated dates, and made swift travel plans. Some of us flew in, others drove in groups, and a few followed each other in a caravan—all with one destination in mind: to be there where we were needed most.

It didn’t take rocket science to figure out a way to reunite; the only thing that mattered was showing up. Our hearts were so full of love for one another that nothing could stop us from being together.

Family Bonds Shine in Times of Grief

Though it was a time of sorrow, the togetherness we felt brought us even closer. It’s in these moments of loss that the bonds of a tight-knit family shine the brightest. There’s a silent understanding among us—an unspoken promise—that we will always make every effort to be present. It’s not about convenience; it’s about commitment, love, and unity.

As we journeyed to the East Coast, our bags were packed, and our hearts were heavy yet hopeful. This wasn’t an adventure filled with sightseeing and exploration, but one that carried deeper meaning. This journey was about honoring a life well-lived and teaching our children the importance of family, faith, and remembrance.2 Column

Teaching Our Children the Reality of Life

We cannot sugarcoat life for our children. We cannot shelter them from the reality that life is temporary. When a loved one is called home, it means their mission here on Earth has been completed. Only God knows when that time will come.

What we can do is guide our children through these experiences, allowing them to witness the process of celebrating a life even after someone is gone. It’s not just about mourning; it’s about cherishing the beautiful memories left behind.

At my uncle’s wake service, a family friend shared a simple yet powerful truth during the eulogy:

"It’s okay to be in sorrow because our loved one is no longer with us physically. But on the other side, we find peace knowing he is no longer suffering and is in a place with God."

It was a bittersweet reminder—grief and gratitude often walk hand in hand.

Finding Strength in Faith and Family

Throughout the week, we leaned on faith to carry us through. We gathered for daily novenas, praying for the soul of our loved one. We came together over meals, sharing stories of the great man who had touched so many lives. Our children listened, asked questions, and absorbed the reality of life and death in a way that words alone could never teach.

They saw that even in sadness, love prevails. Even in loss, unity strengthens.

We mourned together as a family, experienced this journey as a family, and found comfort in one another as a family. The time we spent with him will always be treasured, and the memories he gifted us will live on in our hearts.

The Journey Matters More Than the Destination

Every road trip we take—whether joyful or solemn—reminds us of the heart of

. It’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey and who we share it with.

And in moments like this, we are reminded of what truly matters:

💙 Family. Faith. Love. Togetherness. 💙

No matter where life takes us, one thing remains the same—our hearts will always be full, our bags will always be packed, and our love for each other will always guide the way.
