“The Gift of Giving: How Volunteering Changed My Heart”
There was a time in my life when I thought giving back meant simply donating money, sending supplies, or signing up for a one-time charity event. But I never truly felt what it meant—until one day, I stepped out of my comfort zone and into a place where my hands, heart, and presence were needed.
It was June 8, 2019, a warm summer morning, when I found myself standing in a group of volunteers, preparing to build a home for a family I had never met. I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t a builder, an architect, or a painter. But I showed up, and sometimes, showing up is the most powerful first step.
We listened carefully to instructions—safety protocols, responsibilities, and the process of building a home from the ground up. It wasn’t just about hammering nails or putting up walls. It was about building a future for a family, creating a space where love, warmth, and security would grow.
My task? Painting.
At first, I thought, It’s just painting. It’s not that important. But as I brushed each stroke against the walls, something shifted inside me. I imagined the little hands that would touch these walls, the laughter that would fill these rooms, the family dinners, bedtime stories, and whispered prayers that would take place here.
It wasn’t just a house. It was a home.
I realized that day that giving isn’t about money, skill, or convenience. It’s about presence. Being there, standing alongside strangers who quickly became family, working toward something bigger than ourselves—that’s what changes hearts.
It’s easy to get caught up in our daily struggles. As moms, we’re constantly pulled in different directions, juggling responsibilities, and sometimes, we barely have time for ourselves. But stepping away from our own world, even for a moment, to serve someone else?
That’s where we truly grow.
At the end of the day, I wasn’t exhausted—I was fulfilled. The aches in my arms didn’t matter. The sweat and dust on my clothes didn’t matter. What mattered was the overwhelming joy of knowing that a family’s dream had come closer to reality.
I didn’t just help build a house that day—I built a new perspective. A heart more open to serving, loving, and giving.
A Call to Love

"Lord, open our hearts to love beyond convenience. Let us see the needs around us and step forward in faith. May we serve not for recognition, but because You first loved us. Let our hands be Your hands, and may our giving reflect Your grace. Amen."
